Frequently asked questions

Q. Why should I do an Apprenticeship rather than just get a job?
A. On average a qualified apprentice earns an extra £100,000 over their lifetime over non qualified workers. The experience, knowledge and skills you gain over the first few years make you highly employable and valued by your employer. It will set you up for a long career in your chosen discipline.

Q. What happens if I can’t finish the Apprenticeship?
A. You will be certificated for the units and qualifications you have achieved up to that point

Q. What if I can’t get an apprenticeship with an employer?
A. There is a scheme for certain age groups called Programme Led Pathways, this allows you to do an apprenticeship with WATA and will assist you in finding employment. Click here for more details

Q. Will I be paid?
A. Yes if you are on an employed scheme. If you are on the Programme Led Pathway scheme you can apply for the Education Maintenance Allowance.

Q. What will WATA do for me?
A. Assist you in finding employment, monitor and support you throughout your Apprenticeship.

Q. What qualifications do I need to apply for the programme?
A. None specifically, but you should have a good educational background, preferably with GCSE’s in English, Maths and Science. A technical certificate will be an advantage.

Q. What are the benefits of completing an apprenticeship?
A. You will obtain internationally recognised qualifications and gain practical skills as well as earning while you learn.

Q. How long does the apprenticeship last?
A. On average an Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering takes four years to complete, it will be less in other occupations

Q. Will I need to go to college?
A. This can vary depending on the college and the course being taken. For the Advanced Apprenticeship you will usually expect to attend full time college for the first year, after that you will attend as a day release student.
