Case Study – Claire Dustan – Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group
Reaching new Heights…
…with a NEBOSH Distinction
Claire Dustan, 23, from Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group has just been named NEBOSH Best Candidate Award.
After successfully completing 6th form Claire opted for the world of work instead of the usual university route. Working in a facilities management company as a Health and Safety Administrator Claire quickly developed a keen interest in law and how safety practices and good communication can empower staff.
In the summer of 2014, and wanting to progress further in the field, Claire applied for a Health and Safety Administrator role at MADG. Her potential was quickly realised leading to Claire’s current role of Health and Safety Co-ordinator. This is primarily an advisory role overlooking Health and Safety for the operational hangars for both military and civil aircraft.
As well as carrying out audits and inspections Claire enjoys working on the ‘Safety Matters Programme’ a project that focuses on all aspects of safety culture aimed at empowering individuals and raising awareness of behavioural safety. “It’s interesting and gratifying seeing positive changes. I enjoy the communication aspect and working with a variety of colleagues in operations as well as project managers. I like to think that the work we are doing is helping and empowering people. I enjoy
communicating with people and knowing that they are comfortable to come to the team with any queries or concerns”
When being shown around MADG the rapport Claire has built with her colleagues is evident and testament to her work ethic, respect for her fellow employees and the great work the Safety team at MADG have put in place.
With the completion of her NEBOSH Certificate has come greater responsibility. “Gaining the
NEBOSH Certificate has really helped me in my role every day and has given me greater confidence in the decisions I make. I would recommend the NEBOSH course to anyone that works in safety”
On finding out that she had received the Best Candidate award with NEBOSH Claire was deservedly pleased. “I can’t quite believe it. I was really pleased to have passed then to find out I had got a distinction and then to actually get Best Candidate was great.”
Gill Walton, Head of Safety said “We are really proud of Claire for achieving her Certificate and getting the Best Candidate Award. She does great work in what can be a high risk environment.”
WATA offer both a NEBOSH block course and day release. Claire opted for the block course that suited her learning style. “At WATA the tutors related the learning to events and this really helped you remember the course content. Being on the class with people from such varied work backgrounds helped too. Everyone had their own anecdotes and experiences that they could relate to the lessons.”
Product Manager for Health, Safety and Environment at WATA, Steve Wilde commented “Claire’s award reflects not just her in-depth legal understanding but how it is applied to real world situations. We look forward to Claire returning to start her Diploma and continue to build on her success.”
