A half day asbestos awareness course which aims to help meet the requirements of Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 for those persons who are liable to disturb asbestos while carrying out their normal everyday work, or who may influence how work is carried out.
The new Approved Code of Practice (L143) provides a list of 16 workers that should be provided with adequate information, instruction and training: general maintenance staff; electricians; plumbers; gas fitters; painters and decorators; joiners; plasterers; demolition workers; construction workers; roofers; heating and ventilation engineers; telecommunications engineers; fire and burglar alarm installers; computer installers; architects; building surveyors and other such professionals and shop fitters.
What does the course cover?
• The properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke
• The types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and asbestos containing materials in buildings and plant
• The general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency, for example an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace
• How to avoid the risks from asbestos, for example during routine maintenance or building work
