From trainees to valued employees – the role of apprentices at Michell Instruments

Michell Instruments is an international leader in high-precision sensing, specializing in instrumentation for measuring and controlling trace moisture, relative humidity and oxygen. Established 40 years ago, the company serves industries as diverse as petrochemical and pharmaceutical to power generation and food processing , and exports around 90% of its products.

Its main manufacturing site and head office is in Ely, UK, and the company has a long history of employing apprentices, providing them with training in real-world skills, which give them a solid grounding for their later careers. Michell’s position as a global organisation provides valuable experience in working with customers and colleagues from around the world.

Above all, Michell gives apprentices a chance to progress, with all apprentices who have completed their courses staying to progress their careers at the company. For example, former engineering apprentice, Amy Salter, is now working in a senior position in the company’s service department. Auberon Tatum, another Michell apprentice, has gone on to a product management role and is also in the final year of his engineering degree, which has been sponsored by the company.

Michell usually offers 1 or 2 apprenticeships each year. Currently, the company has four apprentices: two in manufacturing, one graphic design apprentice and one in customer services. Although Michell is a manufacturer, its operations include a host of supporting and administrative roles, so there is a wide range of skills needed and a corresponding range of opportunities for apprentices and trainees.

Michell have worked with West Anglia Training Association over the years to help secure the right quality of apprentice for our business, assist with the delivery of the programme and to provide support and guidance to both apprentice mentors and the apprentice themselves. At Michell we see the apprenticeship as a way of developing a skilled and sustainable workforce, which has helped grow our business, helped deliver consistent quality and provides a route of entry for our future management team into the business.
